The Wandering Room
The word SALOON started in the wild west as a joke by English immigrants. In England a saloon was a richly furnished exclusive room of a pub(Iic house). The English had borrowed the word 'salong' from the French who used it to designate the room used for high society gatherings. The French in turn had taken this word from the Italian 'salone', an official or government room. 'Salone' was a variation of 'sal', the Scandinavian word for common or public room. During the Middle Ages the Vikings of Normandy took over the rule of southern Italy and met their subjects in the 'sal' to dictate conditions.

So ... the original Scandinavian 'sal' sailed to Normandy, conquered Sicily, wandered up Italy, was adopted in France, spread to England, immigrated over the Atlantic and went out west to become a saloon.
