Friendly Enemies
We've seen it many times. Two men who don't like
each other are forced into a situation together.
They fight - physically, emotionally or both - but
wind up being good friends who accomplish a great
task. When did this common theme start?
Your guesses fall short if you don't mention the
first story of literature. This is the opening theme
of the Gilgamesh epic written in cuneiform more
than 2700 years ago in Mesopotamian. Gilgamesh,
the super King of the first civilization has a terrible
attitude. Shemhat, the foremost temple prostitute,
is sent to tame Enkidu, the wild man who lives among
the animals of the forest. He's the only one with
enough strength to challenge Gilgamesh. After six
days and seven nights of love, Enkidu is ready for
civilization and the king. They fight, become friends
and go on a great mission together.
Who would have guessed that their story would conquer
Hollywood thousands of years later?

Have you eaten your oatmeal
this morning? If you're Canadian, you probably have. Canadians
lead the world in consumption of oats; nearly five times
as much as Americans. The Chinese, at the other extreme,
don't eat oats at all. |
