According to the heart
The word cord is tied to an ancient word for intestines. Sinew and intestines were the raw materials for cord and rope production in days of old.

The 'cord' found in many English words however comes from the Latin word for heart. 'Accord' originally referred to actions aimed at the heart in search for agreement. Concord meant almost the same thing, done with the heart, done with agreement. The opposite, discord, meant apart from or without the heart. 'Record' meant to learn by heart. The heart and mind were symbolically interchangeable years ago.

Cordial first described a medicinal drink that stimulated the heart. The 'cour' of courage also belongs to the heart family. One must be strong of heart to be brave.

The Greek cousins of the Latin 'cord' appear as 'card' and supply us with our cardiac words. An even more distant relative turns into 'cred', which should convince us that the family of words is incredible.
