The First Name
Adam was the first man, and the first sinner. 'Adam' stems from a Hebrew word for earth, as does the Latin word human, from 'humus' meaning earth.

The Greek words for the compass points; Anatole, east; Dusis, west; Arktos, north; Mesembria, south, spell out the word Adam and make the sign of the cross if you point to them on your body.

According to Moslem legend Adam was buried in a cave near Mecca. Noah took his coffin on the arch and returned it to cave after the flood.

Adam's Peak in Sri Lanka is so called because of a footprint (5 ft. long) in the stone at it's top. It is said that Adam stood here on one foot for 200 years to atone for his sin and be reunited with Eve.

Ecstasy tablets can be called Adams because of the abbreviation MDMA for their methamphetamine base. Humans seem to prefer sinning than being down to earth.

Times of India easily wins the circulation race selling at least two million copies of each edition.

The following words entered the English language 50 years ago:
WEIRDO - Although the word weirdie is a few years older, weirdo, first recorded in 1955, became the expression of choice. Where were all the weirdos before the 1950s?
VIDEOPHONE - Although there was no such thing in 1955 - at least not commercially - science-fiction authors had no doubt that we'd eventually have visual contact during telephone time.
